DUO Two Factor Security
In today's world, account security is a major concern for universities. It can pose a major threat to students,
faculty, and staff if accounts are hacked. For example if someone hacks your account, they will have access to
contacts, calendar, and other private info. For this reason two factor authentication apps have risen in popularity.
The South Dakota Board of Regents has purchased Duo Two-Factor Authentication, to add a second layer of
security to online accounts, for all higher education institutions in the state.
Why Use DUO Security
Here's an analogy - Imagine living in a dangerous place and having one door lock. However your
friend down the way has a deadbolt and door lock securing their door. Each lock requires a separate key so to
break into their place, someone would need to get through two locks, not just one. Who's safer? Two-factor authentication
is the two door locks only for your online accounts. These significantly lower the risk of getting hacked by combining
two methods of protection.
About Enrolling & Using DUO
DUO will require a second form of authentication during sign-in, similar to an online banking and Gmail account. We
recommend setting up multiple devices as a backup in case your primary device is lost or broken.
- Enter username and password as usual
- A notification is sent to your device, requesting you click on a verification message
- Log in securely
Once you've registered with DUO you're ready to go. You'll login as usual with your username and password, and then use
your device to verify that it's you. Your administrator can set up the system to do this via one-time passcode, the
DUO Mobile smartphone app, and so on. View the step-by-step How to Enroll in DUO Guide.
Tokens are available for purchase through the SDState Bookstore at

Planning to get a new device?
If so, please be sure to get a bypass code from the
MyDUO.sdstate.edu portal
before you get your new device to ensure you will still be able to access all of your accounts
while setting it up with DUO. Once your new device is setup with DUO, you will no longer need to use the bypass code.
Locked out of your account?
If you have been locked out of your account, it will reset in 15 minutes. After 15 minutes has passed from your last login attempt,
please try logging in again. If your issue continues to persist, please contact the Support Desk.
